Residents count gains as FG commissions’ power station in Umuahia

Erratic power supply experienced by residents and business operators in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, has come to an end, following the commissioning of the 132/33 KVA sub-station at Ohiya in Umuahia South Local Government Area.

The power station built by the Federal Government and evacuated by the Abia State government was initiated 10 years ago, but was abandoned by previous administrations in the state.
Consequently, business owners, especially hoteliers, have been counting their gains since the completion of the project.
George Onuba, general manager, Eastern Comfort Hotels and Garden Resort, revealed that the power situation has improved drastically, noting that it would enable them to provide better services to customers.
Cornelius Okonkwo, accountant, Villa Roy Hotel & Suites Limited, who decried the absence of public power supply in Umuahia in the past, gave kudos to the Federal and the state governments for successfully completing the project.

“Electricity used to be our major challenge. We spent so much money on diesel, just to ensure that our guests are comfortable. We spent about N35, 000 daily, only on diesel, which reduced our profit,” he affirmed.

Ugochukwu Emezue, chief press secretary to the Abia State governor, Theodore Orji, observed that the completion of the project had brought a new lease of life to residents.
According to him, it has brought to an end, the erratic power supply experienced in the town.
“Abia people have been expecting this for a long time. Something that looked like a mission impossible has been made possible by the present administration in the state.

People don’t know that this project has been on for the past decade, but abandoned by previous administrations and that is why we must appreciate the efforts of President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Orji in ensuring that it was realised,” he stated.
