Insecurity: Nigeria needs state police now - Abia Attorney-General

TO achieve effective community policing and check the current security situation in the country, Abia State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Umeh Kalu, has advised the federal government to allow state police.
Speaking with The Nation in Umuahia, Kalu said governors are not in charge of the state in terms of security, which is why there are various security problems across the country, as they depend on the state police commissioners who must take orders from the Inspector-General of Police before acting.
Kalu noted that, “The state governors are not truly the state chief security officers of their different states and the only way to ensure they are really in-charge of their states is to allow state police to exist, which will make them to be fully in-charge for security to be effectives in their states”.
He said that the federal government police will always be there and be allowed to exist side by side with the state police, pointing out that they will complement each other, while security situation in the country will be greatly improved.
On the fear that governors may abuse state police, Kalu said “the governors will never abuse the usage of the state police, the state houses of assembly will always be there to monitor their activities and ensure compliancy”.
The Abia state judiciary boss said the courts in the state have been computerised, stressing that it has helped the judiciary to be up and doing unlike what has been happening before now and that it is very easy for the workers to access materials for any court case.
